The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) is a next generation armored tactical vehicle developed to replace portions of the aging Humvee fleet in U.S. military service. Designed for modern combat environments, the JLTV combines the off road mobility of a light tactical truck with the survivability standards of Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles.
Built to operate in asymmetric warfare, urban combat, and expeditionary missions, the JLTV offers improved crew protection against roadside bombs, mines, and small arms fire while maintaining high maneuverability across difficult terrain. The platform supports troop transport, reconnaissance, command and control, and weapons carrier roles.
The JLTV program was originally developed by Oshkosh Defense for the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps. Oshkosh Defense remains the primary manufacturer and integrator of the vehicle platform, using its TAK-4i intelligent independent suspension system for enhanced mobility and stability.
Powered by a Banks 866T turbo diesel engine producing approximately 340 horsepower, the JLTV can achieve road speeds of up to 70 mph (113 km/h). The vehicle has an operational range of around 300 miles (480 km), allowing extended tactical deployments without frequent refueling.
The average unit cost of a JLTV varies depending on configuration and mission package, but standard production vehicles are estimated at approximately USD 400,000 to USD 550,000 per unit.
The JLTV was developed under a U.S. military modernization effort aimed at improving force protection and battlefield mobility after lessons learned in Iraq and Afghanistan. Compared with the Humvee, the JLTV provides significantly higher blast resistance, modular armor protection, and advanced digital networking capability.
The vehicle uses a scalable armor design that allows operators to adapt protection levels based on mission requirements. Its V shaped hull improves survivability against improvised explosive devices and landmines. The JLTV can also integrate remote weapon stations equipped with machine guns, grenade launchers, or anti tank missiles.
A major strength of the JLTV is mobility. The TAK-4i suspension system enables high speed movement across rough terrain while maintaining crew stability. The vehicle is transportable by helicopters such as the CH-47 Chinook and cargo aircraft including the C-130 Hercules.
The platform includes modern battlefield electronics, secure communications, night vision compatibility, and onboard power generation systems to support advanced mission equipment. Several allied nations, including Lithuania, Slovenia, Brazil, and Belgium, have also selected the JLTV for future tactical mobility programs.
