The Altay is Turkey’s indigenous fourth-generation main battle tank, developed to modernize the Turkish Land Forces and reduce reliance on foreign armored platforms. Named after General Fahrettin Altay, a key figure in the Turkish War of Independence, the program began in the late 2000s under Otokar with design assistance from South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem (drawing on the K2 Black Panther). After contractor changes and powerpack challenges, BMC assumed production responsibility. Serial production started in 2024–2025, with the first units delivered to the Turkish Armed Forces in October 2025 following extensive testing (over 35,000 km of mobility trials and 3,700 live-fire exercises).
The Altay prioritizes balanced firepower, protection, and mobility for high-intensity and regional operations. It features a four-person crew (commander, gunner, loader, driver) and integrates Turkish subsystems from Aselsan, Roketsan, MKE, and others. Early T1 variants use a South Korean powerpack; later T2 models will incorporate the indigenous BMC Power BATU engine.
Primary manufacturer is BMC (BMC Defense/BMC Otomotiv). Design originated with Otokar; key partners include Aselsan (electronics, fire control, AKKOR APS), Roketsan (armor), MKE (main gun), and Hyundai Rotem (initial technology transfer).
Powered by a 1,500 hp diesel (South Korean DV27K on T1; BATU V12 on T2), the Altay reaches a maximum road speed of 65 km/h and approximately 45 km/h off-road. Operational range is about 450 km. It handles 60% gradients, side slopes around 30%, trench crossing, and fording depths of 1.2 m unprepared (up to 4 m prepared/underwater).
Unit cost is estimated at USD 11.75–13.75 million depending on variant and configuration (T1 higher due to imported powerpack elements; T2 lower with greater localization). An initial contract covers roughly 250 tanks (85 T1 + 165 T2), with longer-term plans potentially reaching 1,000 units.
The Altay represents Turkey’s entry into the small group of nations producing modern main battle tanks, with hunter-killer capability, NATO-compatible 120 mm ammunition (including potential gun-launched missiles), modular composite armor plus ERA, and the AKKOR active protection system for improved survivability against ATGMs and other threats. Primary operator is the Turkish Land Forces; limited export interest has been reported.
