The Sukhoi Su-35 Flanker-E is a highly agile 4.5-generation multirole fighter aircraft designed by Russia’s Sukhoi Design Bureau and produced by United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). A deep modernization of the Su-27 “Flanker,” the Su-35 integrates next-generation avionics, engines, and radar systems while maintaining the proven aerodynamic design of its predecessor.
Developed primarily for air superiority and multirole strike missions, the Su-35 is engineered to compete against Western fighters such as the F-15EX and Eurofighter Typhoon. The aircraft first flew in 2008 and entered service with the Russian Aerospace Forces in 2014.
Powered by two AL-41F1S turbofan engines with thrust vectoring nozzles, the Su-35 achieves a maximum speed of Mach 2.25 and a range of over 3,600 km. It features exceptional maneuverability, allowing it to perform advanced aerobatic maneuvers like the Pugachev Cobra and the Kulbit—making it one of the most agile fighters in service today.
The Su-35 carries a potent mix of R-77 and R-73 air-to-air missiles, Kh-31 anti-ship and anti-radiation missiles, and guided bombs. Its Irbis-E PESA radar can detect aerial targets up to 400 km away, and its advanced electronic warfare suite provides improved survivability in hostile environments.
Although not a true stealth fighter, the Su-35 incorporates reduced radar cross-section materials and sophisticated sensors for limited low observability and high situational awareness. It has seen combat operations in Syria, providing valuable operational experience for Russia’s modernized air fleet.
