The Saab Gripen F is the two seat version of Sweden’s Gripen E multirole fighter, designed to combine advanced pilot training with frontline combat capability. Developed by Saab in partnership with Brazilian industry, the aircraft completed its first flight on August 28, 2026, entering the airborne phase of its test program. Saab says the aircraft is intended to support both conversion training and advanced combat missions.
The Gripen F is manufactured by Saab in Sweden with substantial Brazilian industrial participation. Brazil served as the launch customer and played a direct role in developing the two seat variant through a technology transfer program involving Brazilian engineers, technicians and pilots. The aircraft retains the Gripen E’s open architecture, networked mission systems, electronic warfare suite, AESA radar and infrared search and track sensor.
Gripen F has a maximum speed of approximately Mach 2 and uses a General Electric F414G engine producing up to 98 kN of thrust. Saab lists a 16,500 kg maximum takeoff weight, 10 external hardpoints and air to air refueling capability. Gripen E/F aircraft use the Raven ES-05 AESA radar and Skyward-G IRST, supported by electronic warfare and tactical data links.
The fighter can employ a broad range of air to air and air to surface weapons. Saab highlights Meteor and IRIS-T integration, while other compatible weapons and precision guided munitions can be incorporated through the aircraft’s open architecture. Unlike the single seat Gripen E, the Gripen F does not have the Mauser BK-27 internal gun.
A standalone Gripen F flyaway price has not been publicly established. Brazil’s 2014 contract covered 36 Gripen E/F aircraft, associated systems, support and equipment for SEK 39.3 billion, while Colombia’s 2025 package for 17 aircraft was valued at EUR 3.1 billion and included weapons, training and services. These package prices should not be treated as individual aircraft prices.
