The M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS) is a U.S. 7.62mm precision rifle developed to give Army sniper teams faster follow-up shots and greater flexibility than the bolt-action M24. Knight’s Armament Company developed the weapon from the SR-25/Mk 11 family, while the U.S. Army selected the M110 to support precision engagements against personnel and light materiel targets.
The M110 uses a gas-operated, semi-automatic action and a 20-round detachable magazine. Its original configuration incorporated a 20-inch free-floating barrel, adjustable stock, MIL-STD-1913 rail system and quick-attach sound suppressor. The Army lists an effective range of 800 meters, while the system was designed for rapid engagement of multiple targets.
Knight’s Armament Company (KAC), based in Titusville, Florida, developed and manufactures the M110 family. The platform evolved from the SR-25 and Mk 11 Mod 0 systems used by U.S. special operations forces.
| Variant | Description |
|---|---|
| M110 SASS | Standard U.S. Army 7.62mm semi-automatic sniper system |
| M110A1 SDMR | Shorter 7.62mm squad designated marksman rifle developed by Heckler & Koch |
| M110K1 | KAC 6.5mm Creedmoor precision configuration |
| M110 family | Includes configurations with different barrel lengths and signature-reduction options |
The M110A1 is a separate Army designated marksman system with a 16.3-inch barrel and 600-meter stated range.
The M110 fires 7.62x51mm NATO ammunition. With M118LR ammunition, muzzle velocity is approximately 2,575 feet per second, while the Army specifies an 800-meter effective range for the M110.
The Army’s historical procurement records do not establish a simple current retail price for the complete M110 system. A 2010 budget document reported approximately $6.2 million for 448 systems, but that figure covered procurement rather than a straightforward commercial rifle price.
