F-22A Raptor Air Dominance Stealth Fighter

The F-22A Raptor is the United States Air Force’s premier air superiority fighter and the world’s first operational fifth generation stealth combat aircraft. Designed to dominate contested airspace, the F-22 combines low observability, supercruise capability, advanced avionics, and exceptional maneuverability into a single platform. Its primary mission is achieving and maintaining air superiority, while also conducting precision strike, intelligence gathering, and electronic warfare missions.

Manufacturer

The F-22A Raptor was developed under the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program by Lockheed Martin as the prime contractor, in partnership with Boeing and Pratt & Whitney. The aircraft was specifically designed to counter advanced enemy fighters and integrated air defense systems.

Speed and Range

Powered by two Pratt & Whitney F119 afterburning turbofan engines with thrust vectoring, the F-22 can reach speeds exceeding Mach 2.25 and cruise at supersonic speeds without afterburners. It has a ferry range of approximately 1,850 miles (2,980 km) and a combat radius of about 590 miles (950 km), allowing it to project air power deep into contested environments.

Variant

VariantDescription
F-22AOperational production model used by the U.S. Air Force
YF-22Prototype aircraft developed during the ATF competition
F-22A Increment UpgradesModernized versions with enhanced sensors, software, and weapons integration

Cost / Price

The estimated flyaway cost of an F-22A Raptor is approximately $150 million per aircraft, while the overall program cost exceeded $67 billion. When research and development costs are included, the average procurement cost per aircraft surpasses $350 million.

The F-22’s stealth shaping, advanced sensor fusion, AN/APG-77 AESA radar, and internal weapons carriage allow it to engage enemy aircraft before being detected. Armed with AIM-120 AMRAAM and AIM-9X missiles, plus a 20mm M61A2 cannon, the Raptor remains one of the most capable air dominance fighters ever fielded.
