F-CK-1 Ching-Kuo Fighter: Taiwan’s Indigenous Jet

The F-CK-1 Ching-Kuo, also known as the Indigenous Defense Fighter or IDF, is a twin-engine multirole fighter developed for Taiwan’s Republic of China Air Force. The program emerged during a period when Taiwan faced restrictions on obtaining advanced foreign combat aircraft. Development therefore focused on creating a domestically supported fighter for air defense and strike missions. The first prototype flew on May 28, 1989, and the aircraft entered service in the 1990s.

Manufacturer

The aircraft was developed and manufactured by Taiwan’s Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC), with U.S. industry participation in parts of the development effort. Production of the original F-CK-1A/B fleet was completed after Taiwan received other foreign fighter aircraft, including F-16s and Mirage 2000s. About 130 production aircraft were completed, alongside prototypes and pre-production aircraft.

Speed, Range and Capabilities

Powered by two Honeywell F125-70/TFE1042-70 afterburning turbofan engines, the F-CK-1 can reach approximately Mach 1.8. Published figures place its range at about 1,100 km with external fuel tanks, while its service ceiling is approximately 16,800 meters.

Its primary radar is the GD-53 X-band pulse-Doppler radar, derived from the General Electric AN/APG-67 family. Reported effective detection figures are approximately 57 km in look-up conditions and 39 km in look-down conditions, although exact performance varies with target and operating conditions.

The fighter carries a 20 mm M61A1 Vulcan cannon and can employ Sky Sword air-to-air missiles, AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missiles, bombs and other Taiwanese weapons. Later F-CK-1C/D upgrades improved avionics and expanded weapons capabilities, including integration of the Wan Chien stand-off weapon.

Variants

Cost / Price

A reliable current unit price is not publicly disclosed. The F-CK-1 was developed as a national defense program rather than a conventional export fighter program, so direct commercial pricing is difficult to establish.
