The NASM-SR (Naval Anti-Ship Missile Short Range) is a next-generation, helicopter-launched anti-ship missile developed to strengthen maritime strike capability in littoral and open-sea environments. Designed primarily for naval aviation platforms, it provides precision engagement against small to medium-sized surface vessels.
The missile is developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), with integration support for rotary-wing naval platforms such as the HAL Dhruv and Sea King helicopters.
NASM-SR is believed to operate at subsonic speeds, optimized for controlled, low-altitude sea-skimming flight to reduce detection and interception risks.
The missile has an estimated operational range of around 50 to 60 kilometers, placing it firmly in the short-range anti-ship category.
Exact unit cost is not publicly disclosed, but it is expected to be lower than long-range anti-ship cruise missiles due to its compact design and shorter engagement envelope.
NASM-SR uses an Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker, enabling high-precision targeting even in cluttered maritime environments. Its fire-and-forget capability allows the launching aircraft to disengage immediately after firing. The missile is also designed for lock-on-before-launch and potentially lock-on-after-launch modes, enhancing operational flexibility.
With a high-explosive warhead and advanced guidance, NASM-SR is suited for neutralizing patrol boats, fast attack craft, and lightly armored naval vessels. Its integration with helicopters provides rapid response capability, especially in coastal defense and maritime security missions.
