CH-47ER Extended Range Chinook Helicopter

The CH-47ER (Extended Range) Chinook is the latest long range variant of Boeing’s proven CH-47 heavy lift helicopter family. Developed to provide greater operational reach without sacrificing payload capacity, the CH-47ER is designed for long distance troop transport, cargo movement, humanitarian relief, and special operations missions. The helicopter incorporates additional fuel capacity and structural enhancements, allowing forces to operate across larger geographic areas while reducing the need for forward refueling.

Built upon decades of Chinook combat experience, the CH-47ER retains the aircraft’s signature tandem rotor design, which provides excellent lift performance, high reliability, and stable handling in demanding environments. The helicopter supports military logistics, disaster response, medical evacuation, and rapid deployment missions while operating day or night in diverse weather conditions.

Manufacturer

The CH-47ER helicopter is manufactured by Boeing Defense, Space & Security in the United States. It is based on the CH-47F Block II configuration and incorporates extended range modifications developed to meet emerging operational requirements. The aircraft features modern digital avionics, an integrated cockpit, advanced navigation systems, and improved survivability equipment. Like other Chinook variants, it can transport troops, vehicles, artillery, supplies, or sling load heavy cargo beneath the fuselage.

Speed and Range

Powered by two Honeywell T55-GA-714A turboshaft engines, the CH-47ER maintains the high performance expected from the Chinook family. It has a maximum speed of approximately 315 km/h (170 knots) and a cruise speed of around 291 km/h (157 knots). The defining feature is its significantly increased operational range, exceeding 1,000 km through enlarged internal fuel capacity, making it suitable for long distance logistics and expeditionary operations.

Cost/Price

Boeing has not publicly disclosed a standard unit price for the CH-47ER because procurement costs depend on customer requirements, mission equipment, training, logistics, and support packages. Based on comparable modern CH-47F Block II configurations, the estimated acquisition cost is generally between US$55 million and US$80 million per aircraft, depending on the final configuration and contract terms.
