INS Kolkata Guided-Missile Destroyer

INS Kolkata (D63) is the lead ship of the Indian Navy’s Kolkata-class guided-missile destroyers, developed under Project 15A. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, the 163-meter warship was commissioned on August 16, 2014. It was designed for air defense, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine operations and fleet support. MDL describes the Kolkata class as a guided stealth missile destroyer capable of operating across multiple warfare domains.

Manufacturer

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited constructed INS Kolkata for the Indian Navy. The ship incorporates Indian combat-system and sensor technologies alongside foreign-origin propulsion and selected weapons and radar systems. Its sensor suite includes the IAI EL/M-2248 MF-STAR S-band AESA multifunction radar, while its combat system integrates radar, sonar, electronic warfare and weapons data.

Speed and Range

The destroyer uses a Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG) propulsion arrangement with four gas turbines and can reach about 30 knots. Public specifications commonly give a range of approximately 6,000 nautical miles at 18 knots. Its principal offensive weapon is the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, while four eight-cell VLS units provide 32 cells for Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles.

Cost/Price

A definitive individual unit price for INS Kolkata Warship is not consistently published in current official sources. An earlier Indian defense analysis reported the three-ship Project 15A program at approximately ₹11,662 crore, but this should not be treated as the exact acquisition price of INS Kolkata alone.
