  • Payload Capacity 9 / 10
  • Reliability & Maintenance 8 / 10

PROS

  1. EMALS catapults enable heavier aircraft launches
  2. Large flight deck improves sortie generation
  3. Advanced AESA radar and EW suites
  4. Supports stealth fighters and AEW fixed-wing aircraft
  5. Significant boost to China’s regional power projection

CONS

  1. Conventional propulsion limits long-range endurance
  2. Technology integration still unproven in combat
  3. Lacks nuclear-powered operational range
  4. Dependent on developing carrier aviation doctrine
  5. Maintenance demands likely high for EMALS systems

The Fujian (CV-18) represents China’s most ambitious leap in aircraft carrier development, marking a major shift toward U.S.-style high-end naval aviation. As the first Chinese carrier equipped with Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) technology, Fujian signals the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is moving beyond STOBAR limitations and toward CATOBAR capabilities similar to the U.S. Navy’s Ford-class carriers.

Design, Manufacturer & Purpose

Constructed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and launched in 2022, Fujian serves as the lead ship of China’s next-generation carrier class. Built for extended blue-water operations, it supports China’s efforts to increase regional power projection and expand its presence in contested zones such as the Western Pacific.

Capabilities & Technology

Fujian features a flat-top design with three EMALS catapults and advanced arresting gear, allowing it to launch heavier, fully fueled aircraft including the J-35 stealth fighter, KJ-600 AEW aircraft, and enhanced strike platforms. Its integrated island is equipped with AESA multifunction radars, modern battle-management systems, and improved electronic-warfare suites.

Powered by a conventional (non-nuclear) propulsion system, Fujian is expected to reach speeds above 30 knots with operational endurance comparable to major global carrier classes. Its full-load displacement—estimated at over 80,000 tons—positions it among the world’s largest conventionally powered carriers.

Operational Outlook

Once fully operational, Fujian will provide the PLAN with greater sortie rates, better fixed-wing support operations, and sophisticated airborne early warning capabilities. While it lacks the global reach of U.S. nuclear carriers, Fujian marks China’s strongest step toward a modern blue-water carrier force.
