PROS
- Extended standoff reach: Demonstrated a range close to 100 km during official trials.
- Precision guidance: Uses inertial navigation combined with satellite navigation data.
- Aircraft integration: Successfully tested on the Indian Air Force's Su-30MKI.
- Warhead flexibility: Trials included different warhead configurations.
- Domestic development: Supports India's indigenous precision-weapons manufacturing effort.
CONS
- Limited public performance data: Detailed accuracy figures and flight-speed specifications remain undisclosed.
- Restricted confirmed platform information: The Su-30MKI is confirmed, but broader operational compatibility requires verification.
- Unpublished unit cost: Public procurement pricing is not confirmed.
- Operational status uncertainty: Successful trials do not, by themselves, confirm full operational service.
- Range depends on launch conditions: The demonstrated range should not be treated as a guaranteed distance under every flight profile.
The Gaurav Long Range Glide Bomb (LRGB) is an Indian air-launched precision-guided weapon developed to engage ground targets from a distance. Designed to glide toward its target after release, it offers an alternative to conventional unguided bombs and can help aircraft attack targets without flying directly over them.
Developed for the Indian Air Force, Gaurav belongs to the 1,000 kg class of glide weapons. India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) reported successful flight testing in August 2024 and further release trials in April 2025. During the April trials, the weapon demonstrated a range close to 100 kilometers, according to India’s Ministry of Defence.
Manufacturer
Gaurav was designed and developed by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), and Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur. Adani Defence Systems & Technologies and Bharat Forge participated as development and production partners, alongside other Indian industrial suppliers.
The program supports India’s effort to develop domestically produced precision weapons and reduce reliance on imported systems. Its intended role includes attacks against selected ground targets using guided delivery rather than relying solely on a bomb’s ballistic trajectory.
Speed and Range
Gaurav has a publicly demonstrated range close to 100 kilometers. Its actual reach depends on release altitude, aircraft speed, flight conditions, and the weapon’s configuration. It uses an inertial navigation system (INS) combined with satellite navigation data to guide the weapon after release.
The Indian Air Force’s Sukhoi Su-30MKI is the publicly confirmed launch platform. DRDO’s April 2025 trials tested integration at multiple aircraft stations and different warhead configurations. An official maximum flight speed has not been publicly established, so a Mach rating should not be assumed.
Cost/Price
The Indian government has not publicly disclosed a confirmed unit price or a complete procurement contract value for Gaurav. Production costs may depend on order quantities, guidance components, warhead configuration, and integration requirements. Any specific price should therefore be treated as unverified unless supported by an official contract or government announcement.
