The Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) is a short range, ship launched surface to air missile developed to defend naval vessels against modern airborne threats, including anti ship cruise missiles, aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial systems. Designed as the successor to the RIM 7 Sea Sparrow, the ESSM provides significantly improved maneuverability, speed, guidance, and electronic counter countermeasure capabilities. It is widely deployed by the United States Navy and numerous allied navies participating in the NATO SeaSparrow Missile System Program (NSMS).
The latest ESSM Block 2 introduces an active radar seeker, allowing greater engagement flexibility and improved performance against highly maneuverable and low flying targets. The missile is compatible with existing naval vertical launch systems, making it a cost effective upgrade for many modern warships.
The ESSM is manufactured by Raytheon, now part of RTX, in cooperation with an international consortium under the NATO SeaSparrow Missile System Program. Development involves multiple partner nations, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Denmark, Greece, Belgium, Portugal, and Türkiye. The program emphasizes interoperability across allied naval forces while supporting evolving maritime air defense requirements.
The ESSM travels at speeds exceeding Mach 4, allowing rapid interception of fast moving aerial threats. Depending on the variant and engagement profile, its operational range is approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles). High agility, thrust vector control, and advanced guidance enable the missile to defeat sea skimming cruise missiles and maneuvering aircraft in complex electronic warfare environments.
The estimated procurement cost of an ESSM Block 2 missile generally ranges from about US$2 million to US$2.5 million per missile, depending on production lot, procurement quantity, and support package. Total program costs vary according to launcher integration, logistics, and fleet modernization requirements.
