The Blue Steel missile was a British air-launched, rocket-propelled nuclear stand-off weapon developed during the Cold War to equip the Royal Air Force’s V-bomber force. Designed to allow bombers to release a nuclear payload outside the range of contemporary Soviet surface-to-air defenses, it served as an interim strategic deterrent between free-fall bombs and submarine-launched systems.

Developed primarily by A.V. Roe and Company (Avro), later under Hawker Siddeley, Blue Steel originated from a 1954 British Ministry of Supply requirement. Elliott Brothers provided the inertial guidance system, while Armstrong Siddeley (later Bristol Siddeley) developed the Stentor liquid-fuel rocket engine. The missile entered operational service with the RAF in February 1963 and was carried by Avro Vulcan B.2 and Handley Page Victor B.2 bombers. Approximately 53 operational live rounds were produced. It was retired by the end of 1970 as the UK transitioned its nuclear deterrent to Polaris submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
