P 800 Oniks Supersonic Anti Ship Cruise Missile

The P-800 Oniks, NATO name SS N 26 Strobile, is a long range supersonic anti ship cruise missile built to defeat modern naval air defenses through speed, low altitude flight, and smart guidance. Developed by NPO Mashinostroyeniya, the missile entered Russian service in the early 2000s and became the foundation for several export and derivative systems, including the Indo Russian BrahMos family.

Manufacturer

NPO Mashinostroyeniya, Russia

Speed

Up to Mach 2.5 using a liquid fuel ramjet after booster launch

Range

About 300 km in export configuration, higher in some domestic profiles depending on flight path

Cost or Price

Not publicly disclosed

Oniks is designed for launch from ships, coastal batteries, submarines, and aircraft. After a solid rocket booster phase, the missile transitions to ramjet cruise, maintaining high supersonic speed while flying sea skimming at very low altitude in the terminal phase. This reduces enemy radar detection time and reaction window.

Guidance combines inertial navigation with an active radar seeker in the terminal stage. The missile can operate in group attack mode where one missile climbs to search and assign targets while others remain low. A 200 to 250 kg high explosive or semi armor piercing warhead is optimized for disabling large surface combatants.

Oniks is deployed in Russian Bastion coastal defense systems and on various naval platforms. Its design emphasizes survivability against electronic warfare and layered naval air defense systems.
