The Type 88 Surface-to-Ship Missile is a truck launched coastal defense missile developed for the Japan Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF). Its sea skimming capability enhances survivability against naval air defense systems. The missile carries a high explosive warhead designed to inflict severe damage on destroyers, frigates, amphibious ships, and other surface combatants.
Japan has not officially disclosed the exact unit cost of the Type 88 missile system. Defense analysts estimate the missile and launcher package costs several million dollars per battery, depending on support equipment, vehicles, radar systems, and operational configuration.
The system remains cost effective for coastal defense missions due to its mobility, long service life, and domestic production support within Japan’s defense sector.
