Israeli Military Says Airstrikes Hit Hezbollah Operatives and Infrastructure

The Israel Defense Forces carried out a series of airstrikes across southern Lebanon and the Beqaa Valley, targeting Hezbollah operatives and suspected military infrastructure, the military said in a statement on Sunday. The strikes are the latest in ongoing operations since a truce agreement with Hezbollah in late 2024.

According to the IDF, one strike near the southern village of Bir el-Sanasel hit what the military described as a Hezbollah weapon manufacturing site. Lebanese health officials reported at least one civilian death and one injury from that strike.

In eastern Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley, the IDF said it struck other Hezbollah facilities, while another strike near the Tyre area targeted an individual described as a Hezbollah operative. Details on additional casualties were not released by the Israeli military, and Lebanese authorities have not provided independent confirmation.

IDF Intent and Regional Context

The Israeli military says the strikes aim to disrupt Hezbollah military capabilities that it says violate the terms of the November 2024 ceasefire agreement. That truce, brokered with Lebanese and external parties, called for the withdrawal of nonstate armed groups from certain areas and aimed to ease cross-border tensions.

Since the ceasefire, the IDF claims it has killed hundreds of Hezbollah operatives and struck numerous infrastructure targets during periodic operations in Lebanon.

Civilian Warnings and Evacuations

In earlier operations around January 21, the Israeli military issued evacuation warnings to residents of several Lebanese villages ahead of planned strikes on suspected Hezbollah infrastructure. These warnings were intended to reduce civilian harm, highlighting the challenges of military operations near populated areas.

Broader Pattern of Strikes

The current strikes reflect an ongoing pattern of military engagement between the IDF and Hezbollah since the November 2024 ceasefire. Over the past months, Israeli forces have repeatedly targeted tunnels, rocket launch sites and training camps associated with the group.

Hezbollah has consistently rejected calls to disarm and has resumed rebuilding military infrastructure in various Lebanese regions, according to multiple reports from Israeli and regional sources.

Implications for Regional Security

The continued use of airstrikes underscores persistent tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border and reflects the difficulty of achieving long-term stability. The strikes may affect broader regional dynamics, including Lebanese internal politics and Iran’s support for Hezbollah. Analysts note that any escalation risks drawing in additional actors and could complicate diplomatic efforts.
