Germany has awarded a production contract for the Taurus Neo air-launched cruise missile, marking a significant step in modernizing the Luftwaffe’s precision strike capabilities. The deal was announced on December 18 by Europe’s Taurus Systems joint venture and the German BAAINBw defence procurement body.
The Taurus Neo represents an enhanced version of the existing Taurus KEPD 350 missile, which has a 270nm (500km) range. The new contract builds on a previous deal from last year that covered maintenance and capability updates for Germany’s existing missile stockpile.
MBDA, together with its joint venture partner Saab, will oversee production. According to MBDA, the contract includes expanded production capacity and further development of advanced features, reflecting Germany’s commitment to maintaining a state-of-the-art air-launched strike capability.
The Taurus Neo is designed to provide greater operational flexibility and precision targeting for the Luftwaffe. Analysts note that such enhancements may include improved guidance systems, modular warheads, and electronic countermeasure resilience, although official specifications remain limited.
The initiative underscores Germany’s strategy to reinforce its domestic defense manufacturing base while modernizing its strategic air-launched weapons. The production timeline and delivery schedule have not been publicly disclosed, but the move is expected to strengthen Germany’s long-range strike readiness in the coming years.
