Lanarkshire Named UK AI Growth Zone, Targets Jobs and Investment
The UK government has designated Lanarkshire as the latest AI Growth Zone, a new economic and technology hub focused on artificial intelligence infrastructure and investment. The announcement signals major private sector funding and broad regional development goals.
Lanarkshire AI Growth Zone Overview
The Lanarkshire AI Growth Zone will be developed around a data centre facility in Airdrie led by Scottish data centre firm DataVita with support from AI cloud provider CoreWeave. This initiative is part of the UK’s broader AI Opportunities Action Plan and the government’s Modern Industrial Strategy, aimed at expanding AI computing capacity and regional economic growth.
The UK government says the project will support more than 3,400 jobs over the coming years, with about 800 roles focused on higher-paid AI and digital positions including software and research roles, and additional positions tied to construction and infrastructure development.
A planned community fund worth up to £543 million will support local training, after-school coding initiatives, and charities over a 15-year period, with funds expected as data centre capacity comes online.
Investment and Infrastructure
The announced private investment for the Lanarkshire site is £8.2 billion, intended to underpin data centre construction, power infrastructure, and related facilities that support AI and digital services. The development is expected to incorporate more than 500 megawatts of on-site power generation and explore renewable energy use and waste heat reuse.
In statements tied to the designations, UK leadership framed the plan as both an economic opportunity and a way to spread the benefits of technology investments to local communities. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the project would bring jobs and direct support to households, while senior ministers noted the goal of ensuring AI benefits are felt broadly across communities, not just in core tech centres.
Strategic Context and AI Growth Zones Policy
AI Growth Zones are a part of the UK government’s policy to attract investment in AI-enabled data infrastructure by improving planning support, power access, and local economic integration. These zones aim to strengthen the UK’s position in global AI innovation and ensure regions can host high-capacity data centre networks.
Under the wider programme, Lanarkshire is the fifth designated AI Growth Zone, joining earlier sites in Oxfordshire, North and South Wales, and the North East of England. Designation carries expectations around delivery milestones and compliance with planning requirements.
Industry and Local Response
DataVita’s managing director described the project as more than data centre construction, citing innovation parks and energy infrastructure as key elements. CoreWeave International’s leadership highlighted the significance of moving from AI strategy to operational implementation.
Local engagement through community funding and apprenticeships is designed to develop a regional talent pipeline for AI-related employment. These initiatives align with officials’ emphasis on linking high-tech investments to workforce development and local economic resilience.
