UK Defence Chief Says Greenland is Within NATO Area of Responsibility
The United Kingdom’s Chief of the Defence Staff said Greenland sits within NATO’s area of responsibility, noting the alliance’s existing security role for the Arctic territory amid increasing strategic scrutiny.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton made the comments in testimony before the UK’s Defence Select Committee. He said Greenland, as part of Denmark and NATO, is covered under the alliance’s military planning and collective defence frameworks.
Knighton was asked about contingency planning for Greenland in light of recent comments by US officials framing the island as a national security priority. He said NATO’s existing security guarantees apply across its territory, including Greenland, without the need for separate planning by the United Kingdom.
Parliamentarians pressed senior military leaders on how expanding NATO commitments, including reassurance missions in Eastern Europe and enduring obligations to allies, affect British forces. Knighton acknowledged broader strategic demands on NATO but reaffirmed that Greenland’s status within the alliance’s defence remit is clear.
Greenland is strategically positioned in the High North and has bearing on transatlantic security, including missile warning, early warning and space surveillance systems hosted by allied forces.
The official remarks align with recent statements from NATO and Greenland’s government that also emphasize defence through collective alliance arrangements. Greenland’s authorities have publicly said they will strengthen efforts to ensure defence activities are framed under NATO auspices amid heightened geopolitical interest in the Arctic.
