US Delivers Fourth C-130 to Tunisian Air Force
The United States delivered a C-130H Hercules transport aircraft to the Tunisian Air Force in a ceremony at Sidi Ahmed Air Base in Bizerte, expanding Tunisia’s tactical airlift capability under ongoing defense cooperation. The January event marked the fourth C-130 aircraft the US government has transferred to Tunisia since 2021, part of a long-running security partnership between the two countries.
Senior US and Tunisian officials attended the handover, including US Ambassador Bill Bazzi, Tunisia’s Minister of National Defence Khaled Sehili, and military leaders from both nations. The delivery supports Tunisia’s ability to conduct transport missions, joint exercises, security operations, and rapid response tasks in the region.
Strengthening Airlift and Operational Reach
The addition of the C-130H Hercules supports ongoing efforts to expand and modernize the Tunisian Air Force’s air transport capabilities. The aircraft joins a growing fleet of C-130 variants operated by Tunisia, including legacy C-130B/H models and newer C-130J Super Hercules transports previously acquired under bilateral agreements.
Officials highlighted the role of the C-130 platform in enhancing operational flexibility. The Hercules is widely used around the world for airlift, airdrop, humanitarian assistance, and allied training missions. Tunisia’s expanded fleet increases its capacity to support domestic security tasks and multinational exercises.
Long-Running US-Tunisia Defense Cooperation
The delivery continues more than four decades of defense cooperation between the United States and Tunisia, which includes training, sustainment, and equipment transfer programs. Tunisia is designated as a major non-NATO ally, a status that facilitates long-term military engagement and support between the two partners.
US security assistance to Tunisia extends beyond transport aircraft to include training initiatives and other equipment that support regional stability and counterterrorism efforts. This cooperation has enabled joint participation in exercises such as African Lion, where Tunisian forces work alongside US and allied units to improve interoperability and readiness.
What This Means for Regional Air Mobility
The expanded C-130 fleet enhances Tunisia’s air mobility in North Africa and the Mediterranean. Tactical airlift assets like the C-130 are crucial for moving troops, supplies, and humanitarian aid quickly across vast distances, particularly in areas with limited infrastructure. Improved airlift also supports Tunisia’s contributions to regional missions and multinational operations.
This recent delivery underscores both countries’ interest in maintaining a capable, interoperable Tunisian Air Force that can respond to evolving security needs in North Africa. The added aircraft reinforces Tunisia’s ability to support regional security objectives and contributes to the broader framework of US defense cooperation in the region.
