The MQ 4C Triton is the United States Navy’s primary high altitude long endurance unmanned aircraft for maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. Developed by Northrop Grumman, the MQ 4C is based on the RQ 4 Global Hawk airframe but heavily modified for naval operations. It features reinforced wings, de icing systems, and lightning protection to allow safe flight in harsh maritime weather. The aircraft is unarmed and optimized solely for ISR missions.
Triton operates at altitudes above 50,000 feet with endurance exceeding 30 hours. This allows continuous coverage of critical sea lanes, coastal regions, and contested maritime zones. Its operational range enables missions across the Pacific and Atlantic without forward basing.
The drone’s core capability is its advanced sensor package. The AN ZPY 3 Multi Function Active Sensor radar provides 360 degree coverage and can track thousands of surface contacts simultaneously. Combined with electro optical and infrared sensors, Triton can identify ships, classify targets, and cue other naval assets such as the P 8A Poseidon.
Operationally, the MQ 4C supports anti submarine warfare, surface warfare, search and rescue, and maritime security missions. It is a key element of the US Navy’s distributed maritime operations concept, enhancing situational awareness while reducing risk to crewed aircraft.
