Türkiye Anadolu Task Group NATO

The Turkish Navy has launched a major deployment of its Anadolu Task Group, positioning TCG Anadolu as the flagship for commanding NATO amphibious and landing operations across European waters.

According to an announcement from Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defence on January 20, 2026, the task group departed from Foça Naval Base to begin operations under national command while fulfilling dual roles as Commander Amphibious Task Force (CATF) and Commander Landing Force (CLF) within NATO’s Allied Reaction Force framework.

The mission, which runs from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, underscores Türkiye’s central contribution to the alliance’s amphibious and rapid-reaction posture. The current phase involves a transit from the Mediterranean northward, scheduled between January 20 and April 23, 2026.

Task Group Composition and Capabilities

The Anadolu Task Group is structured as a self-sustaining expeditionary amphibious force aligned with NATO doctrine. It includes:

  • TCG Anadolu (L-400): A 232-meter amphibious assault ship based on the Spanish Juan Carlos I design, featuring a full-length flight deck, well deck for landing craft, and capacity for battalion-level forces, aviation assets, and command staff. It serves as the afloat headquarters and command-and-control hub.
  • TCG Derya: A fast combat support ship providing underway replenishment of fuel, ammunition, provisions, and water, enabling extended autonomy during long transits.
  • Escorts: The I-class frigate TCG Istanbul (air defense, surface, and anti-submarine warfare) and the Ada-class corvette TCG Kinaliada (littoral and escort protection).

Embarked elements comprise an amphibious marine infantry battalion, landing craft mechanized, rigid-hulled inflatable boats, amphibious armored assault vehicles, naval special warfare teams (SAT and SAS), shipborne helicopters, and Bayraktar TB-3 unmanned aerial vehicles. The force totals around 1,500 personnel.

This composition allows for integrated command of multinational amphibious maneuvers, raids, maritime security missions, and sustained operations without shore-based reliance.

Operational Scope and NATO Integration

The deployment spans key theaters: Mediterranean, Bay of Biscay, North Sea, Baltic Sea, Adriatic, and related waters. It demonstrates NATO’s capacity to shift integrated forces from southern to northern flanks.

The task group will participate in multiple exercises to validate interoperability and readiness:

  • Steadfast Dart 2026 (multi-domain reinforcement for the Allied Reaction Force).
  • Northern Quadriga 2026 (Baltic amphibious maneuver, mine warfare, maritime control).
  • Dynamic Mariner, Cold Response, and Joint Warrior 2026 (North Atlantic and High North endurance).
  • Neptune Strike 26.1 (enhanced maritime strike and vigilance).

Support will also extend to ongoing operations like Sea Guardian (Mediterranean situational awareness), Brilliant Shield, and Noble Shield (northern deterrence).

The mission includes 13 port visits to strengthen forward presence and alliance ties.

Strategic Context

This deployment highlights Türkiye’s growing role in NATO’s maritime architecture, bridging southern and northern theaters amid increased focus on reinforcement, freedom of navigation, and protection of critical sea lines.

It tests NATO’s agile, interoperable amphibious concepts under European leadership, showcasing domestically developed platforms like TCG Anadolu and Bayraktar TB-3 UAVs.

The Turkish Ministry of National Defence emphasized the force’s positioning at the core of the alliance’s rapid-reaction capabilities across multiple maritime domains.
