S-500 Prometey: Russia’s Next-Gen Air & Missile Defense Shield

The S-500 Prometey (Prometheus) represents Russia’s most advanced air and missile defense system, developed by Almaz-Antey to form the backbone of the country’s future integrated air defense network. Designed to complement and eventually supersede the S-400 Triumf, the S-500 introduces capabilities approaching those of a strategic missile defense system, providing protection against aircraft, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and even low-orbit satellites.

The  S-500 Missile Defense System features an engagement range exceeding 600 km and can intercept targets at altitudes up to 200 km, reaching near-space levels. Its advanced radar network reportedly detects and tracks hypersonic weapons and ICBMs traveling at speeds exceeding Mach 14, making it one of the fastest-reacting systems in service. Each S-500 battery includes command vehicles, radar units, and 77P6 launchers mounted on BAZ-69096 10×10 trucks, offering mobility across diverse terrains.

Equipped with 77N6-N and 77N6-N1 missiles, the S-500 can engage multiple targets simultaneously, providing multi-layered defense coverage for critical installations. Its radar suite utilizes phased-array AESA technology, integrated with Russia’s national missile warning network, enhancing its long-range detection and coordination.

Operational since 2021, the S-500 is currently fielded by the Russian Aerospace Forces for strategic asset protection near Moscow and other high-value areas. Despite limited export prospects, its technological advancements mark a significant evolution in global missile defense architecture.

S-500 Prometey Price in United State

The S-500 Prometey system’s estimated cost is around USD 1.5–2 billion per battery, considering its advanced radar components, missile inventory, and command systems. Actual pricing varies based on configuration, training, and support contracts.
