Federal Agents Kill US Citizen in Minneapolis, Minnesota Officials Condemn

Federal agents fatally shot a US citizen in Minneapolis on January 24 during an immigration enforcement operation, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said, drawing sharp criticism from state leaders and protests in the city and beyond. The incident came amid an expanded federal immigration enforcement push in the region.

City and state officials identified the victim as 37-year-old Minneapolis resident Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse with no significant criminal history and a legal gun owner, according to local police. Bystander video reviewed by reporters showed Pretti holding a phone and attempting to assist others, not actively posing a threat, before federal agents restrained him and shots were fired.

Federal Account and Local Officials Clash

The Department of Homeland Security described the shooting as defensive, saying a Border Patrol agent fired after the man approached officers with a handgun and resisted disarmament attempts. Federal officials released an image of a handgun they said was recovered near the scene. Local leaders, including Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, challenged that account, noting video evidence appears to conflict with the federal version.

Minnesota Governor Walz condemned the shooting as “sickening” and called on the White House to end the current federal immigration enforcement operations in the state. Walz said state authorities should lead the investigation, accusing federal personnel of blocking local efforts to access the scene.

Protests and Public Reaction

Hundreds of protesters gathered in south Minneapolis following news of the shooting, confronting federal agents and law enforcement. Demonstrations also took place in cities including New York, Washington, and San Francisco. Clashes at the scene involved tear gas and other crowd management measures.

Officials have urged calm and asked residents to avoid the immediate area while investigations continue. Local leaders reiterated calls for federal enforcement operations in Minneapolis to be halted pending review.

Broader Enforcement Context

The Minneapolis shooting follows a January 7 fatal shooting by a federal immigration officer of another US citizen, Renee Good, which similarly prompted nationwide protests and questions about enforcement tactics. The sequence of incidents has heightened scrutiny of federal immigration operations in the city.

Governor Walz additionally activated the Minnesota National Guard to support local law enforcement and maintain public safety as tensions escalate.

What Comes Next

State and local authorities say they will pursue independent investigations into the shooting. Federal officials have maintained their account of events and defended agents’ actions, while local leaders insist on state control of the probe. National political figures have weighed in, further intensifying the dispute.
