Z10 Attack Helicopter, China’s Dedicated Gunship

The Z10 attack helicopter, also known as the WZ-10, is China’s first purpose-built modern attack helicopter. Designed to give the People’s Liberation Army a dedicated close air support and anti-armor platform, the Z-10 fills a role similar to the AH-64 Apache in U.S. service. It reflects China’s shift from adapted utility helicopters to specialized combat aircraft optimized for battlefield survivability and precision strike missions.

Manufacturer and Origin

The Z10 is developed and produced by Changhe Aircraft Industries Corporation in collaboration with the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). The program began in the early 2000s, with the helicopter entering operational service around 2012. The design focuses on low profile attack runs, tandem crew layout, and integration with modern sensors and guided weapons.

Speed and Range

Powered by twin turboshaft engines, the Z-10 reaches a maximum speed of about 300 km/h, with a typical cruise speed near 270 km/h. Its combat radius is estimated at 400 km, while ferry range with auxiliary fuel tanks can exceed 800 km. This allows the aircraft to support frontline ground forces while operating from dispersed bases.

Armament and Capabilities

The helicopter is equipped with a chin-mounted 23mm or 30mm cannon, anti-tank guided missiles, air-to-air missiles for self-defense, and unguided rocket pods. Advanced electro-optical targeting systems, helmet-mounted sights, and night operation capability allow the Z-10 to conduct missions in all weather and low visibility conditions.

Cost and Price

The unit cost of the Z-10 is not officially disclosed, but defense analysts estimate it between 15 and 20 million USD per aircraft. This lower cost compared to Western attack helicopters makes it attractive for large-scale deployment within China.
