USS George Washington (CVN-73) is a front line nuclear powered aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, built to project air power across the globe. As a Nimitz-class carrier, it serves as a mobile airbase at sea, capable of sustained combat operations, deterrence patrols, and crisis response without reliance on foreign bases.
The carrier was built by Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia, the sole U.S. yard capable of producing nuclear aircraft carriers. Commissioned in 1992, USS George Washington represents proven Cold War era carrier design refined through decades of operational use. It has supported operations in the Middle East, Indo Pacific, and Western Pacific theaters.
Powered by two A4W nuclear reactors, the ship can exceed 30 knots and operate for over 20 years without refueling. Its operational range is effectively unlimited, limited mainly by crew endurance and aviation logistics rather than fuel.
USS George Washington operates a full Carrier Air Wing that typically includes F A 18E F Super Hornet fighters, EA 18G Growler electronic attack aircraft, E 2D Hawkeye airborne early warning aircraft, MH 60 helicopters, and support platforms. The carrier uses steam catapults and arresting gear to launch and recover aircraft in all weather, day or night.
The estimated procurement cost was approximately 4.5 billion dollars at early 1990s prices, excluding the air wing. With regular refueling and complex overhauls, the carrier is expected to serve for around 50 years.
