The Northrop T-38B Talon is an upgraded variant of the iconic T-38 family, refined to deliver improved reliability and better cockpit ergonomics for U.S. Air Force training missions. Originating from Northrop’s pioneering work in lightweight supersonic aircraft, the T-38B retains the Talon’s hallmark agility and speed while incorporating important avionics and systems upgrades that extend its relevance in modern pilot training environments.
Designed during the Cold War and continuously modernized, the T-38B serves as a supersonic transition aircraft used for advanced jet training, physiological instruction, formation flights, and proficiency missions. Its twin General Electric J85-GE-5 turbojets enable a maximum speed of approximately Mach 1.3, providing student pilots with essential high-performance flight experience before advancing to front-line fighters such as the F-15, F-16, or F-22.
The T-38B incorporates refinements over the baseline T-38A, including improved cockpit displays, updated communication systems, and enhanced maintenance features. Although not configured as a combat aircraft, the T-38B remains an essential training platform supporting pilot throughput for Air Education and Training Command (AETC), Air Combat Command (ACC), and the Air Force Test Pilot School.
With a range exceeding 1,100 miles and exceptional climb performance, the aircraft provides a demanding training environment that helps build critical fighter-pilot skills.
