The Spike LR2 is a modern long range anti tank guided missile designed for precision engagement of armored and fortified targets on today’s battlefield. It represents the latest evolution of the widely used Spike missile family and reflects changing ground combat needs, including longer engagement distances and improved survivability.
Developed and manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems of Israel, the Spike LR2 entered service around 2018 as an upgrade to the earlier Spike LR. Its primary mission is to defeat main battle tanks, armored vehicles, and hardened positions while allowing operators to remain under cover. The missile is optimized for infantry units, special forces, and vehicle mounted launchers.
Spike LR2 features an imaging infrared seeker combined with a two way fiber optic data link. This allows true fire and forget use, as well as fire observe update capability where the operator can retarget or abort during flight. The missile can engage targets beyond line of sight using third party target data, a key advantage in complex terrain.
The missile has a maximum range of about 5.5 km when launched from the ground and up to 10 km from helicopters. It uses a tandem HEAT warhead capable of defeating modern explosive reactive armor. Improved flight software and a lighter design increase speed, lethality, and ease of deployment compared to earlier variants.
Spike LR2 is combat proven through the broader Spike family and is in service with multiple NATO and allied forces. It is suited for both conventional warfare and urban combat, offering precision, flexibility, and reduced collateral damage.
The Spike LR2 missile price varies by contract size, configuration, and support package. Open sources estimate unit costs in the low to mid six figure USD range per missile, excluding launch systems and training.
