HISAR-A Short Range Air Defense Missile System

HISAR-A is Turkey’s indigenous short range air defense missile, developed to protect ground forces and critical sites against low altitude aerial threats. Built as part of Ankara’s layered air defense strategy, the system focuses on mobility, fast reaction time, and modern seeker technology suitable for today’s drone and helicopter heavy battlefields.

Manufacturer and Origin

The HISAR-A missile is jointly developed by Roketsan and Aselsan for the Turkish Armed Forces. The program was launched to reduce reliance on foreign air defense systems and strengthen Turkey’s domestic missile industry. HISAR-A entered service in the early 2020s and is now operational with Turkish Army units.

Mission and Capabilities

HISAR-A is designed to defeat aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles operating at low altitude. The missile uses an imaging infrared seeker combined with command guidance, allowing effective engagement in cluttered environments and during night operations. Its vertical launch design enables 360 degree coverage and rapid response.

With a range of up to 15 kilometers and a maximum altitude around 5 kilometers, HISAR-A fills the short range layer of Turkey’s air defense network. The missile is carried on a highly mobile tracked or wheeled launcher, supporting frontline deployment alongside maneuver forces.

Operational Use and Technology

The system integrates Aselsan fire control radar, electro optical sensors, and networked command systems. HISAR-A can operate independently or as part of a larger integrated air defense architecture. Its proximity fuse and fragmentation warhead are optimized for small and agile targets such as drones and helicopters.

HISAR-A Missile Price

HISAR-A does not have a public export price in the United States, as it is not currently offered through U.S. defense procurement channels. Based on comparable short range air defense missiles, unit costs are estimated in the low to mid single digit million dollar range per missile, excluding launchers and radar
