The F-100 Frigate, also known as the Álvaro de Bazán class, is a modern multi mission surface combatant designed for high end naval warfare. Built to escort carrier groups and protect high value naval assets, it was the first European frigate to integrate the U.S. Navy Aegis combat system. The ship is optimized for air defense, anti submarine warfare, and surface combat, making it a key asset for NATO naval operations.
The F-100 is manufactured by Navantia, Spain’s state owned shipbuilder. Developed for the Spanish Navy, the design later influenced other major programs, including the Australian Hobart class and Norway’s Fridtjof Nansen class. Its close alignment with U.S. naval systems improves interoperability with American and allied fleets.
Powered by a combined diesel or gas propulsion system, the F-100 reaches speeds of about 28 knots. It has an operational range of roughly 4,500 nautical miles at cruising speed, allowing extended deployments without frequent resupply. The ship is built for sustained blue water operations.
The core of the F-100 is the Aegis combat management system paired with the SPY-1D radar. This setup allows long range air surveillance and missile defense.
