Singapore Navy Receives Third Invincible-Class Submarine

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has taken delivery of its third Invincible-class submarine, RSS Illustrious, a significant step in expanding its undersea fleet under the long-running Type 218SG programme.

The newest submarine arrived at RSS Singapura – Changi Naval Base on April 9, where senior naval leaders, including Fleet Commander Rear Admiral Kwan Hon Chuong, presided over a homecoming ceremony.

Illustrious was launched at the ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems yard in Kiel, Germany, in December 2022. While Singapore’s Ministry of Defence has not formally announced the boat’s commissioning date, it is slated to join operational service following local sea trials and crew work-ups.

Boosting Undersea Capability

The Invincible-class, formally designated Type 218SG, is a class of advanced conventionally-powered attack submarines tailored to the RSN’s operational needs, particularly in shallow and congested tropical waters.

The submarines feature air-independent propulsion, which extends submerged endurance compared with older diesel boats. They have an overall length of about 70 meters, a submerged displacement of roughly 2,200 tonnes, and a crew of around 28.

Armament includes eight 533mm torpedo tubes capable of firing heavyweight torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and laying mines. The boats also incorporate advanced automation and ergonomics to support prolonged missions.

Reports note that the Invincible-class design draws on elements of the German Type 214 and Type 212 submarines while customising systems and layout for Singaporean requirements.

Strategic Fleet Expansion

RSS Invincible and RSS Impeccable entered service in September 2024, marking the RSN’s shift to a more capable undersea force.

Illustrious marks the third of a planned six boats. Two additional submarines were ordered in a separate contract to bring the total force to six, with projected deliveries into the early 2030s.

The expansion aligns with Singapore’s broader maritime security priorities. Positioned at the southern entrance to the Strait of Malacca and near the South China Sea, Singapore’s sea lanes are among the world’s busiest and most strategically important. A more capable submarine fleet enhances deterrence, undersea surveillance, and crisis response across critical waterways.

Operational Outlook

With Illustrious’s arrival, the RSN can accelerate integration of advanced undersea platforms, improve training pipelines, and rotate patrols without overtaxing crews or logistics. Continued induction of Type 218SG boats is expected to broaden persistent presence in Southeast Asian waters.
