HMS Saud Launch Marks Major Step in Saudi MMSC Frigate Program

The first Saudi MMSC frigate, HMS Saud, has been launched at Fincantieri Marinette Marine shipyard in Wisconsin, marking a major milestone for the Saudi MMSC frigate program and U.S. Saudi defense cooperation.

The launch was confirmed by Army Recognition, which reported that HMS Saud is the first of four Multi Mission Surface Combatant frigates being built in the United States for the Royal Saudi Naval Forces. The program is managed by the U.S. Navy under a Foreign Military Sales framework.

U.S. Built Frigate Based on Freedom Class Design

HMS Saud is based on the U.S. Navy Freedom class Littoral Combat Ship design, modified to meet Saudi operational requirements. The Saudi MMSC frigate features enhanced air defense, surface warfare, and anti submarine warfare capabilities compared to the baseline LCS configuration.

According to program details, the ship integrates the Aegis derived COMBATSS 21 combat management system, a TRS 4D AESA radar, vertical launch cells for surface to air missiles, a 76 mm main gun, anti ship missiles, and close in weapon systems. These upgrades are intended to give the Saudi Navy a multi role surface combatant suited for regional maritime security operations.

Strengthening Saudi Naval Modernization

The Saudi MMSC frigate program is a core element of Saudi Arabia’s broader naval modernization effort, aimed at improving fleet survivability and interoperability with U.S. and allied naval forces. Construction in the United States also supports American shipbuilding and defense industrial capacity.

Fincantieri Marinette Marine, a subsidiary of Italy based Fincantieri, is the prime shipbuilder, while Lockheed Martin serves as the combat systems integrator. The U.S. Navy oversees program execution on behalf of Saudi Arabia.

Program Timeline and Next Steps

With HMS Saud now launched, the ship will move into outfitting, systems integration, and sea trials before eventual delivery to the Royal Saudi Naval Forces. The remaining Saudi MMSC frigates are at various stages of construction at the same shipyard.

Defense officials have described the program as a long term investment in regional maritime stability and U.S. Saudi defense cooperation.
