Italian Fincantieri Launches First PPX OPV For Italian Navy

The first PPX OPV has been launched by Fincantieri for the Italian Navy, marking a key milestone in Italy’s offshore patrol modernization program.

Four vessels of the class are planned, designed to deliver enhanced maritime security, surveillance, and multi mission flexibility across the Mediterranean and beyond.

The launch underscores Italy’s continued investment in adaptable surface combatants capable of both constabulary and limited high end naval operations.

PPX OPV Specifications And Capabilities

The PPX OPV measures 95 meters in length, with a beam of 14.5 meters and a draft of 5.4 meters. Displacement is approximately 2,400 tons. The vessel can exceed 24 knots and accommodates up to 93 personnel.

A key design feature is its wide field of view from the bridge, aimed at improving situational awareness during patrol and maritime security missions.

The ship is equipped with a 76 mm Super Rapid main gun produced by Leonardo. This system is widely deployed across NATO navies and supports programmable air burst ammunition for engaging aerial and surface threats.

Secondary armament includes two 30 mm Lionfish remotely operated weapon systems, also from Leonardo. These systems are intended for close range defense and asymmetric threats, including fast attack craft and unmanned systems.

Importantly, the design includes provision for integration of the CAMM ER air defense missile. While not confirmed as installed on the first hull, this growth option provides a pathway toward enhanced short to medium range air defense.

Aviation And Unmanned Support

The PPX OPV features a flight deck and hangar capable of operating one NH90 naval helicopter and one vertical take off and landing unmanned aerial vehicle. The embarked aviation capability significantly expands surveillance range, search and rescue reach, and maritime domain awareness.

The NH90 platform, already in service with the Italian Navy, supports anti submarine warfare, surface surveillance, and logistics missions. The addition of a VTOL UAV reflects a broader trend across NATO navies toward integrating unmanned systems into surface combatants.

This hybrid aviation approach increases operational flexibility without requiring a larger frigate class hull.
