EU Offers Troops to Greenland Amid Arctic Tensions

The European Union has announced it is ready to provide military support to Greenland if Denmark requests assistance, as tensions rise over U.S. President Donald Trump’s stated interest in acquiring the Arctic territory.

European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius made the declaration Monday at the Folk och Försvar security conference in Sweden. He warned that a U.S. military move to take control of Greenland could effectively end NATO. Kubilius said, “I agree with the Danish prime minister that it will be the end of NATO, but also among people it will be very, very negative.”

Under Article 42.7 of the EU treaty, member states are obliged to assist one another in case of armed aggression. Kubilius confirmed that the EU could deploy troops to Greenland and enhance military infrastructure, including naval operations and counter-drone capabilities, should Denmark request support.

This development comes amid rising geopolitical competition in the Arctic region, where strategic positions, shipping lanes, and natural resources have increased global interest. The EU’s offer signals a firm stance on protecting allied territories and maintaining NATO’s cohesion.

Danish officials have yet to formally respond, but the announcement underscores the EU’s commitment to regional security. Analysts note that Greenland’s strategic location in the North Atlantic makes it a key asset for transatlantic defense and surveillance.

The EU’s move also reflects broader concerns among European leaders over U.S. intentions in the Arctic, emphasizing coordinated defense planning and deterrence measures in response to potential unilateral actions.
