UK To Shoulder Greater NATO Capability Burden
The United Kingdom says it will shoulder a greater NATO capability burden, reaffirming a NATO-first defence posture and exploring new roles in European defence planning amid concerns about reliance on United States capabilities.
In its response to a UK Defence Committee report, the government acknowledged questions over European dependence on US military assets, but did not commit to taking the lead in replacing specific American systems if Washington scaled back its presence.
UK Government Response and NATO Role
The UK Defence Committee warned that a credible transition of responsibilities within NATO requires visible European investment in defence capabilities. Committee members urged ministers to identify where the UK could lead in closing gaps if US forces or systems were reduced in Europe.
In its official response, London reiterated that collective defence through NATO remains central to British force planning and capability commitments. The Defence Investment Plan, still in preparation, will outline priority investments and explore areas where the UK can strengthen alliance capabilities.
The government highlighted progress on interoperability and integration efforts. It noted that the UK’s Carrier Strike Group has been placed under NATO command, integrated into alliance operational and tactical command systems, a step that underlines London’s ongoing contribution to collective security.
European Defence and NATO Linkages
While welcoming European Union efforts on defence readiness under frameworks like the ReArm Europe Plan and Readiness 2030, London made clear that such initiatives should complement NATO, not compete with it. Ministers stressed the need for alignment between NATO and EU defence capability development.
The UK also noted that although it has not fully joined the EU’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) mechanism, British industry will retain partial access under third-country terms. This allows UK firms to participate in SAFE contracts with certain content limits, bolstering industrial cooperation with EU partners.
London said it will continue seeking deeper defence industrial cooperation through the UK-EU Security and Defence Partnership and cited recent agreements with Norway, Turkey, Germany and France as evidence of this approach.
