Saudi Arabia, LIG Nex1 Advance Talks on K-LOGIR Localization
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense is negotiating with South Korean defense firm LIG Nex1 on localizing production of the 2.75-inch Low-Cost Guided Imaging Rocket, known as K-LOGIR or Poniard, under a draft memorandum of understanding.
The discussions, in early stages, focus on technical cooperation, potential manufacturing and supply chain roles inside the Kingdom. They reflect Riyadh’s push to broaden defense manufacturing and support its broader industrial goals under Vision 2030.
What Is K-LOGIR
The K-LOGIR is a South Korean-developed precision guided surface-to-ship rocket in production since 2016 by LIG Nex1 and the Agency for Defense Development. It features imaging infrared guidance and a fire-and-forget profile, with a range near 8 kilometers.
Saudi forces have integrated LOGIR systems on coastal patrol craft and are exploring expanded use across naval and land units, highlighting its relevance for littoral defense.
Draft MoU and Strategic Context
Officials from Riyadh and LIG Nex1 have begun drafting a memorandum of understanding that would set terms for localization, including conditions Saudi authorities deem necessary for success and next steps in negotiation.
While specifics remain under wraps, the initiative aligns with Saudi efforts to boost domestic defense production and reduce reliance on imported munitions. The localization push forms part of a wider set of programs aimed at increasing military industrial capability inside the Kingdom.
Regional and Industrial Implications
Localization of K-LOGIR production with a global defense supplier like LIG Nex1 may strengthen ties between Saudi and South Korean defense industries and support industrial diversification. Saudi officials have engaged with other Korean firms on broader technology transfer and defense cooperation projects in recent years.
