The U.S. Navy has awarded Data Link Solutions a $248 million contract to produce tactical radio systems known as Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio System (MIDS JTRS) terminals for U.S. and coalition forces, reinforcing secure battlefield communications.
Contract Overview
Under the production contract announced January 28, 2026, Data Link Solutions, a joint venture of BAE Systems and Collins Aerospace, will deliver hundreds of MIDS JTRS terminals.
The award supports secure, jam-resistant communications, enabling tactical voice, data, and video exchange among air, ground, and sea units.
Work will take place at facilities in Wayne, New Jersey, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
What MIDS JTRS Does
MIDS JTRS is a software defined tactical radio capable of running Link 16 and additional waveforms. It supports secure, line-of-sight tactical data sharing among multiple forces, improving situational awareness for commanders.
Link 16 is a widely used allied communications standard that allows real-time exchange of position, targeting, and mission data.

The system is designed to operate across a range of platforms including aircraft, ships, ground command nodes, unmanned systems, and armored vehicles.
Strategic Context
MIDS JTRS radios are a core part of the U.S. and allied tactical data network, enabling interoperability in joint operations. These terminals contribute to a secure information picture for air and surface forces.
This contract follows earlier MIDS JTRS work, including a larger indefinite delivery contract with a potential ceiling near $1 billion awarded in late 2024.
Industry and Defense Impact
Data Link Solutions has delivered over 9,000 Link 16 terminals globally over more than 25 years, serving more than 50 nations.
The new contract will increase production capacity, supporting more than 45 U.S. and allied platform types.
