Spain has confirmed an order for 18 Airbus C295 tactical transport aircraft to strengthen its military airlift and paratrooper deployment capabilities. The contract also covers pilot training for the new fleet, according to Airbus and Spanish defense sources.
The Spanish Ministry of Defense selected the C295 to replace older transport aircraft and expand its tactical airlift capacity. These aircraft will serve dual roles, including paratrooper drops and pilot instruction.
The C295, manufactured by Airbus Defence and Space, is a versatile twin-engine turboprop widely used in Europe, Latin America, and Asia for tactical transport, medical evacuation, and surveillance missions. Its short takeoff and landing capability makes it suitable for diverse operational scenarios.
Delivery of the new fleet is expected to begin within the next few years, allowing Spain to modernize its airborne forces and maintain interoperability with NATO allies. The program also includes simulation-based training for pilots to ensure operational readiness.
This order aligns with Spain’s broader efforts to modernize its armed forces, including upgrades to aircraft, armored vehicles, and maritime assets. Analysts note that the C295 fleet will provide a flexible platform for rapid deployment in domestic and international operations.
