South Korea has officially committed $3.4 billion to develop an indigenous fighter engine for its KF-21 fighter program. The Advanced Aviation Engine Development Project will run from 2027 to 2040, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.

The program aims to produce an engine with 16,000lb of military thrust and 24,000lb with afterburners. Initial projections had suggested a 15,000lb military thrust. Hanwha Advanced Aero Engine will lead prototype development, certification testing, and system-mounted flight tests.

The funding highlights Seoul’s push to reduce dependence on foreign engine suppliers and strengthen domestic aerospace capabilities. Officials said the project will cover full-cycle development, including prototype production, testing, and preparation for integration with the KF-21 fighter.

The KF-21 Boramae, South Korea’s homegrown stealth fighter, has been in development since 2015. The indigenous engine program aligns with broader regional trends emphasizing self-reliance in advanced military aviation technology.

Analysts note that this investment will position South Korea alongside other nations pursuing domestic fighter engine capabilities, enhancing both national security and technological expertise.
