China’s hybrid heavy-lift UAV, the YH-1000S, completed its maiden flight in southwest China, the developer said Tuesday. The aircraft is described as the world’s first hybrid-powered unmanned cargo aircraft and represents a new class in large UAV logistics and transport.

The YH-1000S, developed by the 11th Research Institute of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, combines an unmanned airframe with a high-power hybrid propulsion system co-developed with a new-energy vehicle partner. Officials say the hybrid setup cuts takeoff and landing distances and boosts payload and range compared with earlier designs.

The YH-1000S builds on China’s unmanned transport drone efforts. It follows the earlier Caihong YH-1000 aircraft, which had a conventional propulsion system and a payload capacity around 1.2 tons with a range near 1500 kilometers.

According to official statements, the hybrid heavy-lift UAV flew successfully on February 1, 2026, at a test site in Chongqing Municipality.
