Trump Says U.S. Weighs Strong Response to Iran Crackdown Amid Tehran Negotiation Call
President Donald Trump said the U.S. is weighing a tough response to the Iran crackdown as Tehran reportedly called seeking negotiations, a Reuters report showed. The comments came as mass protests across Iran intensified and Tehran’s authorities responded forcefully.
Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that Iran’s leadership had contacted U.S. officials indicating they wanted to negotiate, including on nuclear issues, but he said strong actions might still be needed before any talks occur.
The president said U.S. forces and advisers were evaluating a range of options, including possible military responses, in light of the unrest. He noted the situation remains volatile and that senior advisers would continue to discuss next steps.
Iranian authorities have faced widespread demonstrations since late December, initially sparked by economic grievances and quickly growing into broader anti-government protests. Rights groups report hundreds of deaths and thousands of arrests, though Tehran has not released official casualty figures.
Iran’s foreign minister said Tehran is prepared for both war and dialogue, framing the situation as tense but open to diplomatic engagement. Iranian parliament leaders warned Washington against miscalculation, threatening U.S. and allied targets if Iran is attacked.
Trump also mentioned plans to discuss restoring internet access in Iran with private sector figures as authorities there continue an information blackout.
