Moscow View on Trump and Peace Talks

Russian Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said U.S. President Donald Trump is an effective leader who seeks peace, remarks that come ahead of planned U.S.-Russia-Ukraine diplomatic talks in Abu Dhabi this week. Medvedev spoke in an interview with Reuters, TASS and Russian war blogger WarGonzo.

Medvedev said Trump’s leadership style often looks “brash” but described it as effective and noted Trump’s resistance to pressure from the U.S. political establishment.

He added that Russia has found no evidence of U.S. nuclear submarines that Trump said were positioned near Russian shores last year.

Comments on U.S. Military Posture

Medvedev’s comments questioned the validity of Trump’s claims about U.S. submarine deployments. He referenced Trump’s August statement that he had ordered two U.S. nuclear submarines to forward positions in response to earlier Russian remarks. Medvedev said, “We still haven’t found them.”

Context on Ukraine War and Diplomacy

Trump has repeatedly said he wants to be remembered as a peacemaker and has framed progress toward a peace deal in public remarks. A new round of talks involving the U.S., Russia and Ukraine is expected soon in Abu Dhabi as efforts to find a diplomatic path continue.

Medvedev also stressed that contacts with U.S. officials have become more productive under the current U.S. administration, reflecting thawed diplomatic engagement compared with recent years.

Russia’s War Aims and Medvedev’s Broader Message

Medvedev, a former Russian president and senior Kremlin hardliner, underscored Russia’s belief that it will soon achieve military victory in Ukraine, but said preventing future conflict is the larger goal.

He remains a prominent voice in Moscow’s security establishment, giving insight into perspectives among Russian hardliners while President Vladimir Putin retains final authority on foreign policy.

U.S.-Russia Peace Talks and Wider Diplomatic Landscape

The comments come as fresh diplomatic efforts are underway to address the war that began with Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. A temporary halt in strikes around Kyiv was tied to Trump’s request to Russian leadership earlier this week, illustrating the complex mix of diplomacy and conflict on the ground.
