Greece Evaluates WHAP 8×8 Armored Vehicle
Greece is evaluating the Indian WHAP 8×8 armored vehicle as a potential candidate for future Greek Army requirements, marking a notable step in Athens’ ongoing force modernization efforts. The development was first reported by Army Recognition, citing defense industry and military sources.
The WHAP 8×8 armored vehicle, developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation in cooperation with Larsen and Toubro, is designed for high mobility infantry and mechanized roles. The platform is based on a modular architecture, allowing it to be configured as an infantry fighting vehicle, armored personnel carrier, or command and support variant.
Why Greece Is Looking at WHAP
The Greek Army is assessing multiple 8×8 armored vehicle options to replace aging platforms and improve mobility across varied terrain. The WHAP 8×8 armored vehicle offers amphibious capability, high road speed, and scalable protection levels, features that align with Greek operational needs.
The vehicle has been tested by the Indian Army in desert, mountain, and coastal environments. It can be equipped with remote weapon stations, medium caliber cannons, or anti tank guided missiles, depending on mission requirements.
Strategic Significance
If selected, the WHAP 8×8 armored vehicle would represent one of India’s first major armored vehicle entries into the European defense market. It would also reflect Greece’s interest in diversifying defense suppliers beyond traditional European and U.S. manufacturers.
Indian officials have increasingly promoted the WHAP platform as part of New Delhi’s broader push to expand defense exports, particularly to NATO and partner nations.
Next Steps
No procurement decision has been announced, and the evaluation process remains at an early stage. Greek defense officials are expected to continue technical and operational assessments before moving toward any formal acquisition process.
