Contract Scope and Value

The contract was awarded to Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems in Moorestown, New Jersey, the long time integration and support hub for the Aegis Weapon System.

The base value of the award is $22,220,762. If all contract options are exercised, the cumulative value will rise to $99,903,347.

Work under the base contract is expected to be completed by January 2027. If all options are exercised, performance will continue through January 2031.

The effort includes lifecycle logistics, engineering, and technical services for:

  • All in service and post production Aegis Weapon System surface combatants
  • U.S. Coast Guard cutters equipped with Aegis related systems
  • Surface Combat Systems Center
  • Aegis Training and Readiness Center
  • Integrated Warfare Systems Laboratory

All work will be performed in Moorestown, New Jersey.

Funding and Contracting Details

At the time of award, $1,611,973 in Fiscal Year 2026 Operations and Maintenance Navy funding was obligated. These funds will expire at the end of the current fiscal year, in line with standard O and M funding rules.

The contract was not competitively procured. According to the award notice, it was issued under the authority of 10 U.S. Code 3204(a)(1), which allows sole source awards when only one responsible source can meet agency requirements.

The Navy cited the highly specialized and proprietary nature of Aegis Weapon System integration, sustainment, and software support as the basis for the sole source determination.

The Naval Surface Warfare Center Port Hueneme Division in California is the contracting activity. The contract number is N6339426C4001.

Importance of the Aegis Weapon System

The Aegis Weapon System is a cornerstone of U.S. naval air and missile defense. It integrates advanced radar, command and control, and weapons systems to detect, track, and engage air, surface, and ballistic missile threats.

Aegis is deployed across multiple U.S. Navy ship classes, including:

  • Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyers
  • Ticonderoga class guided missile cruisers

It also supports ballistic missile defense missions, carrier strike group protection, and regional air defense operations.

Sustaining Aegis capability requires continuous engineering updates, software maintenance, logistics planning, and fleet level technical support. These functions are central to the contract awarded to Lockheed Martin.

Lockheed Martin’s Role in Aegis Sustainment

Lockheed Martin has served as the Aegis system integrator for decades. Its Moorestown facility is responsible for system engineering, combat system integration, testing, and fleet support.

This contract ensures continuity in technical expertise, configuration control, and system readiness across the Aegis enterprise. It also supports training and laboratory environments used to prepare sailors and test system upgrades before fleet deployment.

The award aligns with the Navy’s broader approach to sustaining complex combat systems through long term partnerships with original system developers.

Broader Naval Modernization Context

As the Navy continues to modernize its surface fleet, Aegis remains a core element of maritime air and missile defense. Ongoing upgrades such as improved radar processing, software baselines, and integration with new interceptors depend on stable lifecycle support.

Contracts like this one support operational readiness while enabling incremental modernization without disrupting deployed forces.
