NATO Steadfast Dart Begins in Central Europe

NATO has launched its largest exercise of 2026, Steadfast Dart, with allied forces deploying across Central Europe to test rapid deployment and multi-domain operations, according to official NATO announcements and defense reporting.

Steadfast Dart, formally kicked off on 15 January under Allied Command Operations, marks the first operational deployment of the newly stood-up Allied Reaction Force (ARF) within NATO’s Joint Force Command Brunssum area of responsibility.

Scope and Participants

Roughly 10,000 personnel from 11 NATO allies are taking part in the exercise. ARF units are contributed by Bulgaria, Czechia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Spain, and Turkey. Additional forces from Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom are linking national training activities into the broader Steadfast Dart framework.

The multi-domain drill integrates land, air, maritime, space, cyber, and special operations forces to stress test coordination, rapid movement, and combined force readiness across different operational environments.

Training Phases and Host Locations

Steadfast Dart is structured in two main phases. Initial deployments began earlier in January, followed by a training phase scheduled to start next month. The exercise scenario is built around a simulated near-peer threat, designed to test NATO’s ability to deploy, sustain, and operate forces across multiple Central European locations.

Germany hosts significant portions of activity. There the drill transitions into Quadriga, a major national exercise, underscoring close coordination between NATO and host nation training objectives.

Allied Reaction Force Role

The Allied Reaction Force is central to Steadfast Dart. The force is designed to deploy quickly in crisis or contingency operations, demonstrating NATO’s commitment to collective defense and rapid response. This deployment represents ARF’s first major operational exercise in the Brunssum area of responsibility.

Supreme Allied Commander Europe and NATO operational leaders have underscored that this year’s exercise builds on previous iterations and reflects the Alliance’s emphasis on readiness and interoperability in a contested security environment.
