Unlike conventional JDAMs, which rely on gravity after release, JDAM LR incorporates deployable wings and a compact air breathing propulsion system.

According to Boeing, the weapon can deliver a 500 pound class warhead to targets more than 300 nautical miles away. A decoy configuration replacing the warhead with an auxiliary fuel tank extends range beyond 700 nautical miles, offering additional options for deception and electronic warfare missions.

Traditional stand off missiles such as the AGM 158 Joint Air to Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) provide exceptional range and survivability but cost well over $1 million per missile. Standard JDAM guidance kits, by comparison, cost only a fraction of that amount. The latest contract follows successful U.S. Navy flight demonstrations conducted earlier in 2026.

During testing at the Point Mugu Sea Range, an F/A 18 Super Hornet safely released JDAM LR prototypes that completed powered flight while accurately navigating to designated targets approximately 200 nautical miles away. The demonstrations validated aircraft integration, propulsion, and guidance performance.

Boeing describes the weapon as maintaining compatibility with existing JDAM interfaces, allowing integration on legacy and next generation aircraft without major modifications.

Strategic Importance For Future Air Operations

The operational value of JDAM LR extends beyond simply increasing range.

Modern integrated air defense systems deployed by potential adversaries continue expanding engagement distances, forcing strike aircraft to launch weapons farther from defended targets. A powered JDAM enables fourth generation fighters and bombers to contribute to deep strike missions while remaining outside many anti access and area denial engagement zones.

The weapon also supports the Department of Defense’s emphasis on “affordable mass,” the concept of acquiring larger numbers of effective but less expensive weapons rather than relying solely on small inventories of premium missiles.

Industrial Benefits And Future Growth

JDAM LR also leverages the mature manufacturing base established for the standard JDAM program.

Because the weapon retains much of the existing JDAM architecture, production can potentially scale more rapidly than an entirely new missile program. Boeing has also established partnerships with Australian industry, including Ferra Engineering, for wing kit production supporting both JDAM Extended Range and JDAM LR programs.
