TFX Kaan: Türkiye’s 5th-Generation Stealth Fighter

The TFX Kaan, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), marks Türkiye’s entry into the elite group of nations producing fifth-generation stealth fighters. Conceived under the Milli Muharip Uçak (MMU) program, the Kaan aims to replace the Turkish Air Force’s aging F-16 fleet and serve as a key component of the country’s indigenous defense ecosystem.

Design and Capabilities

Designed with stealth, agility, and advanced situational awareness in mind, the Kaan features a low observable airframe, internal weapons bays, and sensor fusion comparable to the F-35. Its twin-engine configuration provides high thrust and redundancy, while its AESA radar, electronic warfare suite, and AI-assisted mission systems allow the aircraft to dominate in contested airspace.

The Kaan can achieve speeds of Mach 2, a combat radius of over 700 miles, and a service ceiling exceeding 55,000 feet. It is optimized for multirole operations—including air superiority, ground attack, and network-centric warfare—with advanced datalink and communication capabilities enabling interoperability with NATO systems.

Development Status

The first prototype of the Kaan completed its maiden flight in February 2024, marking a major milestone for the Turkish defense industry. Full-scale production is expected by 2028, with export interest already emerging from allied nations.
